How to get your business found in AI search
People increasingly ask AI assistants for recommendations. Here's how to make sure yours is one they mention.
More people are asking ChatGPT, Google's AI overviews and similar tools for recommendations — 'who's a good fractional CFO near Manchester?' — instead of scrolling search results. Being visible to those tools is becoming its own discipline, sometimes called generative engine optimisation.
The foundations overlap with good SEO, but with a twist. AI tools favour content that clearly and directly answers questions. So structure your site around real questions people ask, and answer them plainly — FAQ pages, glossaries, and clear 'what is / how much / when to' content.
Use structured data (schema) so machines can parse what you do, where, and what you're expert in. Make sure your name, location and services are consistent everywhere — on your site, your Google profile and third-party listings — so the AI joins the dots.
Build genuine authority signals: real expertise, named people with credentials, and mentions or links from reputable sources. AI tools, like Google, lean towards sources they can trust.
And keep publishing useful, specific content. The businesses AI recommends tend to be the ones that have clearly, repeatedly answered the questions buyers ask. Be the obvious, well-structured answer, and you're far more likely to be the one that gets quoted.
