Cutting through the AI hype as a business owner
Not every AI claim deserves your attention or budget. Here's a simple filter for what's worth it.
Every supplier now has an 'AI-powered' product, and every article promises a revolution. As a business owner, you need a filter for what actually deserves your time and money.
Ask three questions of any AI claim. First: what specific task does it do, and how much time or money does that task currently cost me? If the answer is vague, so is the value.
Second: what would it take to actually get value from it — not just buy it, but embed it in how we work? Many AI tools fail not because they don't work, but because no-one changes their habits to use them.
Third: what's the risk if it gets it wrong? Low-risk tasks (drafting, summarising) are great places to start; high-risk ones (anything customer-facing or involving personal data or money) need more caution.
The useful mindset is neither hype nor dismissal. AI is a genuinely powerful set of tools that will quietly remove cost and effort from specific tasks — and also a field full of overblown claims. Judge each one on the concrete task it does and the measurable value it creates, and you'll make good decisions while others chase shiny things.
